Fugitive Emissions

Fugitive emissions account for around 6 per cent of Australia’s emissions. Fugitive emissions are released in the course of oil and gas extraction and processing; through leaks and controlled releases from natural gas pipelines; and as waste methane from open-cut and underground black coal mines.

Fugitive emissions would be covered from scheme commencement by applying scheme obligations to facilities with direct emissions of 25 000 tonnes or more of carbon dioxide equivalent a year.
